Life at School: Lea’s Favorite Greek Dish – Pastitsio

One of our students, Lea, recently wrote a short essay in Greek class about her favorite food: pastitsio. She described it as “very tasty,” especially when it includes feta cheese. She even said it’s better than her mom’s—because her mom watches Akis Petretzikis on TV to learn how to cook it.

Pastitsio (παστίτσιο) is a beloved Greek dish made with pasta, a minced meat and tomato sauce often flavored with cinnamon, and a rich béchamel topping. The word comes from the Italian pasticcio, which means “pie” or “mixed dish,” but in Greece, pastitsio has become a warm, comforting classic served in homes and tavernas alike.

Lea’s family puts their own twist on it by adding feta cheese, which she thinks makes it even better. She also noted how big the portions are in Greece—and that while there are Greek taverns in Switzerland, the food doesn’t taste quite the same and is more expensive for a smaller plate.

Akis Petretzikis is a well-known Greek chef who became popular after winning the first Greek MasterChef. He shares traditional Greek recipes on TV and online, helping people make dishes like pastitsio at home in a simple and tasty way.

Lea’s essay reminds us that learning Greek goes hand in hand with discovering Greek food and culture. Her favorite dish—pastitsio—is not just delicious, it’s also a part of what makes Greek cuisine so special.
