Proud of our students: Elena participates to a contemporary art project

The Gap is an interdisciplinary artistic research project focusing on human-made “gaps” in Byzantine wall paintings caused by blade weapon traces. The project investigates these marks through artistic reconstruction, documentation, and exhibition of a contemporary fresco.

Spanning two years (2025–2026), the project begins in April 2025 in Athens with the creation of a large-scale fresco on the rooftop of Literature House and culminates in a final exhibition in Tokyo in Fall 2026.

In contrast to the classical separation of disciplines, The Gap merges theory and practice, art and science. Rooted in feminist and anti-Cartesian thought, it affirms that thinking is not confined to the philosopher’s chair but can also be performative.

At the core of the project lies the concept of Othering. The gaps within the fresco are treated as representations of the “Other,” analyzed on multiple levels—material, personal, political, and conceptual.

An artists’ talk will offer space for reflection and exchange. Moderated by Maria Vara (Athens School of Fine Arts), Elena Rădoi (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) and Satoshi Kawata (artist, Japan) will present their perspectives on the Byzantine fresco as a cultural technique. Drawing connections with similar traditions in East Asia, they will share insights into their collaborative work on a 30 m² fresco in Kypseli, discussing cultural translation, technical experimentation, and the embodied nature of mural painting.
