The International Greek Language Day is celebrated annually on February 9th, a day dedicated to honoring the rich history and global influence of the Greek language. This day was established by the Greek Ministry of Education, with the goal of highlighting the cultural and intellectual heritage of Greece, as well as the significant role the Greek language has played in the development of Western civilization.
•February 9th was chosen for this celebration because it marks the day of death of the great Greek poet, Dionysios Solomos, who is considered the national poet of Greece. Solomos is most famous for writing the lyrics to the Greek national anthem, “Hymn to Liberty.”
•We celebrated this day at our school in Athens by reading important parts of the Greek literature. Giannis Ritsos, Konstantinos Kavafis, Maria Polidouri, Kostis Palamas, Nikos Kazatzakis, Giorgos Seferis, Dimitris Psathas and many others..
•International Greek Language Day serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving this linguistic treasure, not only for its historical significance but also for its relevance in modern times. We thank our students for their effort and work to make this celebration so beautiful
