Out of Class Activities: A Cozy Cretan Dinner at Oxo Nou

Learning Greek goes far beyond grammar books and classroom walls — it’s also about tasting the language, hearing its rhythms around a shared table, and experiencing culture in the most authentic ways.

One of our favorite out-of-class activities is our cozy dinner night at Oxo Nou, a traditional Cretan restaurant just a short walk from our school in Athens. Housed in a warm and inviting space, Oxo Nou feels like a little corner of Crete in the heart of the city — a place where good food and heartfelt hospitality come together.

Cretan cuisine is one of the oldest and healthiest in the Mediterranean. Based on simple, seasonal ingredients, it reflects centuries of island tradition. At our dinner night, students and teachers gather to share a delicious meal: dakos with juicy tomatoes and mizithra cheese, tender lamb slow-cooked with herbs, handmade pies, wild greens (horta), and, of course, raki to toast the evening.

The experience is more than just a dinner — it’s a celebration of Greek culture. Students have the chance to practice their Greek in a relaxed environment, ask questions about local customs, and connect with one another beyond the classroom setting. Whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, there’s always a Greek word, a flavor, or a moment you’ll remember.

This evening at Oxo Nou is one of many out-of-class experiences we offer, designed to help you live the language, not just learn it.
