“Tsiknopempti” (Τσικνοπέμπτη) is a traditional Greek celebration that takes place on the Thursday of Carnival, which is the week before fasting begins. The name “Tsiknopempti” comes from the word “tsikna,” which refers to the strong smell of grilled meat. On this day, people gather to enjoy barbecued meats, especially grilled pork and souvlaki, and the air is filled with the scent of the meat being cooked. It’s a day of feasting, dancing, and general merrymaking, as it’s one of the last opportunities to indulge before the fasting period.
The day is filled with lively celebrations, often involving street parties, music, and people wearing costumes. It’s a fun and energetic tradition, as Greeks take to the streets, enjoying good food, company, and the festive atmosphere before the more somber period of fasting begins.
It’s very much about community, enjoying the moment, and celebrating before the fasting period sets in!
We also celebrated this very special day with our lovely students! We had great greek food – souvlaki and of course tzatziki-, too much wine, good greek traditional music and amazing people to be with! We had an amazing day eating, discussing about the greek traditions and of course dancing! Is there a better ending to an amazing celebration than lots of dancing? – No way!
Καλή Τσικνοπέμπτη!
