At Alexander Greek School, our passion for teaching Greek goes far beyond the classroom. That’s why we regularly organize “Out of Class Activities” that bring language and culture together in meaningful and fun ways. One of our recent highlights was the much-loved event: Cultural Presentation – Cooking Greek.
This hands-on session, led by our talented philologist Nancy, focused on two of the most popular, simple, and widely enjoyed dishes of traditional Greek cuisine: Tzatziki and Fava. Both are delicious, healthy, and vegetarian—favorites among Greeks and visitors alike.
Before getting started in the kitchen, Nancy gave students a short but insightful presentation on the cultural significance and regional variations of these dishes. We explored their origins, ingredients, and why they remain beloved staples of everyday Greek life. From the garlic-rich, yogurt-based coolness of tzatziki to the smooth, warm comfort of yellow split-pea fava, both dishes offered a wonderful way to connect language, history, and the Greek table.
Then came the most exciting part: cooking together! Under Nancy’s guidance, students chopped, stirred, mixed, and seasoned with enthusiasm—and of course, lots of laughter. It was a team effort, and the results were delicious.
Naturally, we accompanied our creations with two types of fresh, top-quality bread from our trusted neighborhood bakery: one traditional wholewheat Monastery-style bread, and one large, round Country-style loaf with a thick crust—perfect for dipping!
The best part? We all sat down and ate everything together, enjoying not only the food but also the relaxed, family-style atmosphere that made us feel like home.
This activity brought us closer—not just to the Greek language, but to the heart of Greek culture: sharing food, stories, and smiles.
