Our Greek movie afternoon is one of the most popular out-of-class activities at Alexander Greek School. It allows students to improve their listening skills while discovering the richness of Greek culture through cinema. This week, we enjoyed a special screening of Όλα είναι Δρόμος (Everything Is a Road), one of the most memorable films of modern Greek cinema.
Greek Movie Afternoon: Discovering a Modern Greek Classic
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pantelis Voulgaris, Όλα είναι Δρόμος was released in 1998. The film follows three different men whose lives reach important turning points. Their stories unfold with emotion, realism, and moments of humor. As a result, viewers experience a powerful portrait of contemporary Greece.
Beyond its engaging narrative, the film captures everyday life, relationships, and the diversity of the Greek landscape. Therefore, it offers students a unique opportunity to hear authentic spoken Greek while exploring modern Greek society.
A Special Presentation by Dr. Panagiotis Dendramis
Before the screening, our long-time collaborator Dr. Panagiotis Dendramis, PhD in Film Studies, introduced the film and its cultural significance.
He guided students through its themes, cinematic style, and symbolism. In addition, he explained how Greek filmmakers use storytelling to reflect history, identity, and everyday life. His presentation transformed the screening into an engaging cultural journey rather than simply watching a movie.
Learning Greek Through Cinema
Watching Greek films is an enjoyable way to strengthen language skills. Students become familiar with natural pronunciation, everyday vocabulary, and authentic conversations. At the same time, they gain a deeper understanding of Greek traditions and contemporary culture.
For this reason, our cinema evenings are an important part of our cultural programme. They combine language learning with meaningful cultural experiences that students remember long after the credits roll.
