The educational material "You Speak Greek Already" is addressed to beginners who have to deal with the particularities of the greek language concerning the alphabet and the morphosyntactic structure.
The basic objectives are:
  1. to gradually change the initial stereotypical perception that Greek – a language with a rich history – is inaccessible, incomprehensible, and for this reason inevitably "destined" to be a language spoken in a limited geographic area
  2. to gain familiarity with the morphosyntactic phenomena of the language
  3. to promote multilingualism through the connection of the greek language with other European languages
To achieve these objectives we used the most suitable foreign language learning method, the functional-communicative, without undermining the morphosyntactic structure of the Greek language. Within each chapter there is a specific number of words from the thematic categories, in authentic - if possible - language environment, so that the student becomes aware that (s)he is already familiar with many Greek words from his/her own language, as well as that there are important similarities between European languages at the lexical-semantic level.

The educational material consists of 24 units, in which the morphosyntactic phenomena have an increasing degree of difficulty, which:
a) covers the entire curriculum for the beginners level, and
b) is closely linked to the texts and the words used in each text.

For further practice, and thorough examination of the communicative situations, there is a sufficient number of exercises related to comprehension skills as well as to the production and processing both of oral and written speech.

Each chapter consists of acoustic exercises – select the right option, fill the gaps, matching - based on the texts already taught, or even new. Every four chapters there is a review unit so that the student can evaluate his/her knowledge.

The basic aim of the whole project is the student-centred approach to language. Bearing that in mind, our scope is to allow the user to become gradually more independent in the use of language, being able to use the grammar, the syntax and the vocabulary. Apart from the written and oral speech exercises, which are not the only approach to language learning, there are also games that help to consolidate a language. Based on the same logic, a multimedia CD is created to accompany the printed material.

As far as the dialogues and the texts are concerned, our basic aim is to create authentic communication activities. In particular, the dialogues are created aiming to be as close as possible to the way natural users communicate. In addition, authentic texts are used, related to the Greek history, civilisation and culture.

The present material is flexible, so it can be used both in a classroom environment, as well as in self teaching, always along with the electronic material. In this way, it is accessible to people of all ages, as well as to people with special needs.

Structure of the educational unit

Each unit consists of:
  • 3 texts
  • 6 vocabulary tables (3 with common words and 3 with the basic vocabulary of the beginner’s level)
  • 15 exercises (vocabulary, oral and written comprehension)
  • grammar theory and 5 exercises
  • word games (hangman, cross word, picture and word)
  • more vocabulary tables (including complexity and compositionality)
  • production of written speech
  • production of oral speech
  • table of words

Topics of the Vocabulary

Units 1-4:
  • Names (that have a different meaning, giving the opportunity to “play” with meanings - i.e. Φωτεινή > φως, Σοφία > σοφία, Ειρήνη > ειρήνη etc.)
  • education
Units 6-9:
  • natural sciences: physics – chemistry – mathematics – medicine
  • social sciences: philosophy – philology - politics – history - anthropology
Units 11-14:
  • Technology
  • Sports
Units 16-19:
  • culture: Theater – Music – literature
  • religion
Units 21-23:
  • mythology – archeology
  • nature – environment – biology – astrology

Communicative situations

The necessary vocabulary, directions and structures are given, for an independent and autonomous use of the Greek language. The learners will be able to meet daily needs and social situations (greetings, habits, handshakes), to give information, to use language skills and to "succeed" in environments such as information about the private life, the purchase of products, street directions, entertainment, etc.
In other words, students will be able to "integrate" in the culture of the native speakers of the target language.


The Grammar covers the First Level. There are exercises for practice and consolidation of the respective grammatical phenomena. The review units contain more grammar exercises based on the grammar theory of the previous units.
