Life at school: discovering the city of Chania

Discovering Chania: History, Culture, and Our School in the Heart of the City

The city of Chania is one of the most charming and historic destinations in Greece. Located on the northwest coast of Crete, the city blends Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences into a vibrant cultural landscape.

At Alexander the Great Greek Language School, we are especially happy to announce that our school in Chania has reopened in a new location. Our new building is ideally situated very close to the Municipal Market and only 200 meters from the historic buildings of the Central Court. Because of this central position, the school is placed right in the vibrant cultural heart of the city, surrounded by historic streets, cafés, and local life.

To celebrate the beginning of this new chapter, our teacher recently enjoyed a wonderful walking tour of Chania with our new students, exploring some of the most iconic landmarks of the city.

A Beautiful Neoclassical Building

Our new school building is housed in a beautiful neoclassical structure, a style that reflects the elegance and history of Chania’s urban development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Neoclassical buildings in Chania often feature symmetrical facades, tall windows, decorative balconies, and refined architectural details. These buildings represent an important period in the city’s modern history, when Chania served as the capital of Crete during the time of the Cretan State.

Studying Greek in such an environment creates a special experience. Students are not only learning the language; they are also living inside the history and culture of the city.

Exploring the Old Venetian Harbor

uring their walking tour, our students first visited the famous Old Venetian Harbor of Chania, one of the most photographed places on the island.

The harbor was built by the Venetians between the 14th and 16th centuries, when Chania was an important maritime center of the Venetian Republic. Today, the harbor remains the heart of the city, surrounded by colorful historic buildings, restaurants, and small fishing boats.

At the entrance of the harbor stands the iconic Chania Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the Mediterranean. The lighthouse, rebuilt during the Egyptian administration of Crete in the 19th century, has become the symbol of the city.

Walking along the harbor offers a perfect introduction to the history and atmosphere of Chania.

The Fortress of Firka

Another important stop during the tour was Firka Fortress, located at the western entrance of the harbor.

The Venetians built this fortress in the 16th century to protect the harbor from pirate attacks and enemy fleets. Later, during Ottoman rule, it served as a military barracks and prison.

Firka Fortress also holds great symbolic importance for modern Greek history. In 1913, the Greek flag was officially raised here to celebrate the union of Crete with Greece, marking the end of a long struggle for independence.

Today, the fortress houses the Maritime Museum of Crete, which presents the naval history of the island.

The Historic Neoria (Venetian Arsenals)

The tour also passed by the impressive Neoria of Chania, the historic Venetian shipyards of the city.

The Neoria were built during the Venetian period to construct and repair the ships of the Venetian fleet. Originally there were seventeen large shipyards, although only several remain today.

These long stone buildings with their characteristic arches form one of the most striking architectural landmarks of the harbor. Today they host cultural events, exhibitions, and artistic activities, connecting the city’s maritime past with its modern cultural life.

Learning Greek Through the City

Exploring Chania is one of the best ways to experience Greek culture. For this reason, walking tours like the one our teacher organized are an important part of the student experience.

By walking through the historic streets, students hear Greek spoken in everyday life. At the same time, they discover the stories behind the monuments, neighborhoods, and traditions of the city.

In this way, the city itself becomes a living classroom.

Chania: A City That Inspires

With its rich history, stunning architecture, and lively atmosphere, Chania offers an unforgettable setting for learning Greek.

From the elegant streets near the Municipal Market to the historic harbor, every corner of the city tells a story. We are therefore delighted to welcome students again to our newly located school in the heart of Chania.

And as our first tour with the new students showed, the best way to begin learning Greek is simply to start exploring the city together.
