Life at school: Decorating a Christmas boat in Thessaloniki

A Christmas Boat at Our School: Honouring a Greek Tradition

This year, our school in Thessaloniki chose to celebrate Christmas in a special and meaningful way by decorating a traditional Christmas boat instead of a Christmas tree. The beautifully decorated boat now stands proudly in our school, spreading festive cheer while reminding us of a long-standing Greek tradition that connects the past with the present.

Why a Boat Instead of a Tree?

In Greece, especially in coastal areas and islands, the Christmas boat (καραβάκι) is a cherished symbol of the holiday season with roots that go back many centuries. Long before the Christmas tree was introduced to Greece in the 19th century, Greek families decorated small wooden boats in their homes to mark the coming of Christmas.

This tradition developed naturally in a country surrounded by the sea. For generations, the sea has been central to Greek life, providing food, trade, travel, and livelihoods. Many families had members who were sailors, fishermen, or merchants, often away from home for long and dangerous journeys, especially during the winter months.

Decorating a boat at Christmas time symbolised hope, protection, and safe return. Families would light candles on the boat and decorate it with care, wishing for calm seas, good fortune, and the joyful homecoming of their loved ones. The boat also represented guidance, much like a light in the darkness, leading sailors safely back to their families.

Over time, the Christmas boat became closely linked with the spirit of the season: anticipation, faith, and renewal. It was common for children to carry small decorated boats while singing Christmas carols, adding to the festive atmosphere in neighbourhoods and villages.

Although the Christmas tree eventually became more widespread, particularly in urban areas, the Christmas boat has never lost its cultural significance. In recent years, it has experienced a revival as more schools, municipalities, and families choose to honour this meaningful and uniquely Greek tradition.

The Christmas boat symbolises new beginnings, gratitude for the sea, and respect for the values of family, perseverance, and unity that have shaped Greek history and culture.

Bringing Tradition to Life at School

By decorating a Christmas boat this year, our school wanted to reconnect students with Greek heritage while embracing the festive spirit of Christmas. The boat has been adorned with lights, ornaments, and handmade decorations created by our students, making it a true community effort.

This initiative not only adds a unique and creative touch to our holiday celebrations but also offers an opportunity for students to learn about Greek customs, history, and the importance of preserving traditions.

A Message of Hope and Togetherness

Our Christmas boat stands as a symbol of peace, hope, and unity — values that are especially important during the holiday season. As a school in Thessaloniki, a city closely linked to the sea, this tradition feels particularly meaningful.

We wish all our students, families, and staff a joyful Christmas and a New Year filled with health, happiness, and safe journeys for all.
