Discovering Chania from Above: A Visit to Koukouvagia and the Venizelos Tombs

One of the most rewarding excursions for our students in Chania is a visit to two of the city’s most iconic locations: Koukouvagia Café and the Venizelos Tombs. Together, they offer a perfect combination of local culture, stunning scenery, and fascinating history.

A Greek Coffee with a View

Our journey begins at Koukouvagia, one of the most beloved cafés in Chania. Perched on a hillside overlooking the city, the café is famous for its spectacular panoramic views across Chania, Souda Bay, and the White Mountains (Lefka Ori).

As students relax with a traditional Greek coffee, fresh juice, or one of the café’s famous homemade desserts, they have the opportunity to appreciate the slower pace of Greek life. Cafés in Greece are much more than places to grab a quick drink; they are social spaces where conversations can last for hours and friendships are formed.

Walking Through History

Just a short walk from Koukouvagia lies one of the most historically significant sites in Crete: the Venizelos Tombs.

Situated on the hill of Profitis Ilias, the site is the final resting place of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the most influential political figures in modern Greek history. Often regarded as the architect of modern Greece, Venizelos served as Prime Minister multiple times and played a crucial role in shaping the country’s political and territorial development during the early twentieth century.

Beside him rests his son, Sophocles Venizelos, who also served as Prime Minister of Greece. The monument stands as a symbol of Crete’s contribution to modern Greek history and attracts visitors from all over the world.

The Best View in Chania

The Venizelos Tombs are not only an important historical landmark but also one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region. From the hilltop, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views stretching across Chania’s Old Town, the Venetian Harbor, Souda Bay, and the surrounding countryside.

On clear days, the view extends all the way to the White Mountains, creating a landscape that perfectly combines sea, city, and mountains. It is easy to understand why this location is considered one of the most photographed spots in Chania.
