It’s happening in Athens: Your Guide to Autumn 2025 – 42nd Athens Marathon

42nd Athens Marathon – The Authentic: Running Through 2,500 Years of History

This November, the streets of Athens will once again echo with the pounding footsteps of thousands of runners, each chasing not just a finish line, but a piece of history. The 42nd Athens Marathon – The Authentic – will take place over the weekend of November 8–9, 2025, drawing participants and spectators from every corner of the globe.

The Athens Marathon is unlike any other race in the world. Its course is not a modern creation but a living monument, retracing the fabled route of Pheidippides, the Athenian soldier who, in 490 BCE, is said to have run from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persians. Exhausted from his mission, he delivered his message — “We have won!” — before collapsing. This legendary feat inspired the creation of the marathon race at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, and to this day, the Athens Marathon remains the only event that faithfully follows that original path.

A Weekend of Racing and Celebration
The festivities begin on Saturday, November 8, with two exciting 5 km races: the COSMOTE TELEKOM 5 km Road Race in the late afternoon and the OPAP Universities Night Run, which transforms central Athens into a vibrant sea of runners under the city’s illuminated skyline. These events bring together athletes, students, and casual runners alike, celebrating sport in an accessible, festive atmosphere.

The main stage is set for Sunday, November 9, when the OPAP 10 km Road Race kicks off the morning at 08:15. Shortly after, at 09:00, the full Marathon Race begins in the town of Marathon, where runners will embark on the historic 42.195 km journey to Athens. Along the way, participants will navigate a course that combines challenging terrain with breathtaking views, passing through small towns, olive groves, and open countryside before entering the bustling heart of Athens. At 10:30, the youngest participants will take their turn in the spotlight during the 1.2 km Kids Race, an event that encourages the next generation of athletes to embrace the joy of running.

The Finish Line of Legends
All races conclude at the Panathenaic Stadium, a site as iconic as the marathon itself. Built entirely of marble and restored for the 1896 Olympics, it remains the only stadium of its kind in the world. For every runner, crossing its finish line is a moment of triumph — a connection to both ancient glory and modern achievement.

More Than Just a Race
Organized by the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), the Athens Marathon has grown into a massive international celebration of endurance, perseverance, and cultural heritage. The event attracts elite athletes seeking fast times, recreational runners checking off a bucket-list race, and countless supporters lining the streets to cheer them on. The atmosphere is electric, blending the competitive spirit of sport with the warmth of Greek hospitality.

Though individual registrations for 2025 have now closed due to overwhelming demand, the event offers plenty of ways to get involved. Volunteer opportunities allow supporters to play a vital role in welcoming runners, providing water and encouragement along the route, and ensuring the smooth operation of this world-class event.

For many participants, running “The Authentic” is a pilgrimage — a chance to challenge themselves while becoming part of a story that has endured for millennia. Whether you are running, cheering, or lending a hand, the Athens Marathon is more than a sporting event. It is a timeless journey, a celebration of human resilience, and a reminder that some paths are worth running again and again.
