Our historical activities in Thessaloniki are designed to bring language learning to life, and one of our favourite outings recently took us to the city’s most famous landmark—the White Tower.

Our energetic group of students set off to visit the White Tower, the iconic monument that has become the symbol of Thessaloniki.
Although the day greeted us with a fresh sea breeze, the windy weather only added to the adventure. As we walked along the beautiful waterfront, our students enjoyed the lively atmosphere, admired the views of the Thermaic Gulf, and practised Greek while chatting about everything they saw around them.

Exploring the History of Thessaloniki
The White Tower has witnessed centuries of Thessaloniki’s rich history.
Built by the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century on the site of an earlier Byzantine fortification, it has served many purposes throughout its long history, including as a fortress, military garrison and prison.
Today, the monument has been transformed into a modern museum where visitors can discover the fascinating story of Thessaloniki’s multicultural past through interactive exhibitions and historical displays.
As our students explored each floor, they learned about the city’s evolution while expanding their Greek vocabulary through history, culture and architecture.
Historical Activities in Thessaloniki with a View
The highlight of our visit came at the very top of the White Tower.
Despite the strong wind, everyone happily stepped onto the observation balcony to admire the spectacular panoramic view across Thessaloniki and the sparkling waters of the Thermaic Gulf.
There were plenty of smiles, laughter and memorable photographs as our students enjoyed one of the city’s most breathtaking viewpoints.
Learning Greek Beyond the Classroom
Every out-of-class activity gives students the opportunity to use Greek naturally.
During our visit, they asked questions, shared opinions, described what they could see and interacted with one another in Greek, gaining confidence through real communication rather than classroom exercises alone.
These authentic experiences help transform vocabulary into lasting memories while strengthening friendships within the group.

By combining history, culture, conversation and exploration, our students discovered much more than a famous monument—they experienced the city through the Greek language itself.
