Life at School: Greeks of the Diaspora Meet in Athens

Welcoming Greeks of the Diaspora in Athens

Greeks of the Diaspora in Athens often join our school to improve their Greek or start learning it from the beginning. They arrive from Australia, the United States, Canada, and other countries, each carrying unique family stories. Many feel the ancient nostos—the desire to return to their ancestral home or reconnect with relatives in the villages their parents or grandparents left behind.

A Remarkable Coincidence

In June, a rare and heartwarming moment unfolded in our Athens classrooms. Two retired students—one from Australia and one from the United States—met during lessons and soon discovered an extraordinary connection: their ancestors came from two small villages in Crete, just a few kilometers apart. One traced his roots to Vourgaro, the other to Perivollakia, both in the province of Kissamos, within the prefecture of Chania.

Heritage Shared Over Coffee

This discovery led to many lively conversations between classes. They swapped family recipes, discussed village customs, and reflected on growing up as members of the Greek diaspora. The experience transformed their time in Athens into more than a language course—it became a journey of cultural rediscovery.

Why These Moments Matter

Our school is more than a place to learn Greek. It is a meeting point where cultures and personal histories intertwine. Whether you are a Greek of the Diaspora, a culture enthusiast, or simply someone who loves Greece, you will find a warm welcome and a space to explore your roots.

More Than Language Learning

At our school, language is the bridge connecting the past and present. Whether you are a Greek of the Diaspora in Athens, a heritage traveler, or simply a lover of Greek culture, our programs offer a welcoming space to explore and reconnect.
