At Alexander, our out-of-class activities are designed to help students experience authentic Greek life while practising the language in real situations. This time, our students enjoyed a memorable lunch at the traditional tavern Toixo Toixo, located beside the historic walls of Ano Poli.
Greek Language Activities in Thessaloniki Begin with History
Before lunch, our students explored the beautiful neighbourhood of Ano Poli (Upper Town), one of Thessaloniki’s oldest and most picturesque districts.
Walking through its narrow streets and alongside the Byzantine walls, they discovered stories from the city’s past while enriching their Greek vocabulary with words connected to history, architecture and everyday life.
Experiencing the city first-hand helps students remember new words more naturally and understand Greek culture beyond the classroom.
Greek Language Activities in Thessaloniki Continue Around the Table
After our walk, we arrived at Toixo Toixo, a traditional tavern famous for its warm hospitality and authentic cuisine.
Thessaloniki is widely known as Greece’s culinary capital. Its cuisine combines local Macedonian traditions with influences from Asia Minor, creating flavours that are unique and unforgettable.
Our students enjoyed a delicious selection of traditional meze, discovering the stories behind many local dishes while experiencing one of Greece’s most important traditions: sharing food with friends.
Learning Greek Through Conversation
Meals in Greece are never only about food.
Around the table, our students laughed, exchanged stories and practised speaking Greek in a completely natural environment. They ordered dishes, asked questions, shared opinions and interacted confidently without even thinking about grammar exercises.
