Recently, one of our students from Maryland, USA, completed a four-week learning journey with Alexander Greek School, spending two weeks in Thessaloniki and two weeks in Chania. The first part of our student’s program took place in Thessaloniki. There, he attended lessons, explored the city, and discovered its rich history.
Afterward, he continued his studies in Chania. While the lessons remained intensive, the environment offered a completely different experience. For example, he enjoyed the Venetian Harbor, the Old Town, and the relaxed rhythm of Cretan life.
Meanwhile, every conversation outside the classroom became another opportunity to practice Greek. Consequently, his confidence increased day by day.

The Story Behind Chania’s Famous Bougatsa
For many visitors, tasting bougatsa in Chania is more than a culinary experience—it is a journey into the city’s history.
One of the most famous places to enjoy this traditional delicacy is Iordanis Bougatsa, a family business that has been serving Chania’s signature bougatsa since 1924. Today, it remains one of the city’s most beloved culinary institutions and continues a tradition that has been passed down through four generations.
What makes Chania’s bougatsa unique is its filling. Unlike the custard-filled versions found in other parts of Greece, the Chania variety traditionally uses local cheese, creating a distinctive combination of sweet and savory flavors when topped with sugar.
The history of this pastry reflects the multicultural past of Chania itself. According to the family’s account, the technique was passed on in 1924 by a Muslim baker from Chania. The recipe was then preserved and developed by the family of Iordanis Akasiadis, whose ancestors arrived in Crete from Constantinople following the population movements of the early twentieth century.
As a result, Chania’s famous bougatsa represents a fascinating blend of local Cretan traditions and the culinary influences that have shaped the island over the centuries.
Today, students who visit Chania can still enjoy this authentic taste of history. Fresh from the oven and prepared according to a long-standing family tradition, it remains one of the city’s most recognizable breakfast treats.
