Out of class activity: Eat like a Greek in Exarcheia

Eating Like a Greek in Exarcheia: A Taste of Crete and Cultural Exchange

What better way to experience Greek culture than around a table filled with delicious food, good conversation, and new friends?

As part of our school’s cultural activities in Athens, we took four of our lovely students from Belgium, Italy, and Germany to Oxo Nou, a traditional Cretan taverna in the lively neighborhood of Exarcheia. Our goal was simple: to eat like Greeks, discover some Greek customs, and share traditions from our own countries.

Discovering the Greek Way of Eating

For many visitors, Greek food is one of the most exciting parts of discovering Greece. But eating in Greece is about much more than the food itself. It is about sharing, talking, taking your time, and enjoying the company around the table.

At Oxo Nou, we had the opportunity to experience this firsthand. Instead of everyone ordering an individual meal, we shared different traditional dishes, just as people often do when eating together in Greece. Plates were passed around the table, everyone tried something new, and, of course, there was plenty of conversation.

The Cretan cuisine gave us a delicious introduction to the culinary traditions of Crete, with its emphasis on fresh ingredients, simple recipes, and generous portions made for sharing.

A Table Full of Traditions

During our meal, we also talked about Greek customs and everyday traditions. Food provided the perfect starting point for discussing how culture is often connected to the way we eat and spend time together.

We spoke about Greek hospitality, family gatherings, celebrations, and the importance of sharing food with others. We also discovered that many traditions may look different from country to country, but often have something in common: bringing people together.

Our students then shared traditions from Belgium, Italy, and Germany. It was fascinating to compare customs, celebrations, food traditions, and everyday life in each country.

A True Cultural Exchange

One of the most enjoyable parts of the experience was realizing how much we can learn from one another.

Our students were not simply visitors experiencing Greek culture — they also became ambassadors of their own cultures. Stories and traditions from Belgium, Italy, Germany, and Greece came together around one table.

There were differences, of course, but there were also many similarities. Whether it is sitting down for a long meal with family, celebrating special occasions with traditional food, or welcoming friends into our homes, food and hospitality have a special way of connecting people.

More Than Just a Meal

Our visit to Exarcheia and Oxo Nou was much more than a lunch or dinner outside the classroom. It was an opportunity to experience Greek culture in an authentic and relaxed way while encouraging our students to share their own backgrounds and traditions.

We laughed, tasted new dishes, exchanged stories, and learned from one another — exactly the kind of experience that makes international education so special.

Sometimes, the best lessons don’t happen in a classroom. Sometimes, they happen around a table, with a plate of delicious Greek food in front of you and people from different countries sitting beside you.

Kali orexi — and here’s to many more cultural exchanges around the table!
