Our evening Greek courses in Athens are designed for adults who live or work in the city and want to integrate into everyday Greek life. Learning Greek is not only about grammar and vocabulary, but also about understanding social habits, culture, and real communication — inside and outside the classroom.
A recent example of this approach was our Saturday morning visit to the Kalidromiou Farmers’ Market (Λαϊκή Αγορά) with our A1 and A2 evening students.
A Multicultural Group Experiencing a Greek Tradition
The group reflected the international character of Athens itself. Students included Maria from Belgium, Ben from London, Melissa from Belgium, Natasha from Australia, and Maria from Brazil, all learning Greek for everyday life, work, and social integration.
Exploring the market together offered not only a cultural experience, but also a shared moment of connection, conversation, and real-life language practice.
What Is a Laiki Agora?
The Laiki Agora is one of the most authentic and long-standing Greek traditions. Every neighborhood hosts its open food market once a week, turning ordinary streets into lively social spaces full of colors, aromas, and voices.
At a laiki, visitors can find:
-
Fresh fruits and vegetables from local producers
-
Olives, olive oil, cheese, and honey
-
Seasonal and regional products
For Greeks, shopping at the laiki is a social ritual. It is a place to talk, negotiate, exchange jokes, and catch up on neighborhood news. For language learners, it is one of the best environments to hear real, everyday Greek spoken naturally.
Learning Greek in Real-Life Situations
For our A1 and A2 evening students, the visit was a chance to turn classroom knowledge into practice. Food vocabulary, numbers, polite expressions, and simple questions came to life while walking among the stalls, listening to vendors, and observing local interactions.
Even at beginner levels, these experiences help build confidence and encourage students to use Greek without fear.
Coffee, Conversation, and Reflection
After the market visit, the group enjoyed a morning coffee and relaxed discussion with their teacher Maria. Over coffee, students shared impressions, practiced new words, and compared Greek habits with those of their own countries.
These informal moments are an essential part of our teaching approach, especially for adults who want to feel at home in Athens.
