Our director brought back to our school a lot of fruits from his farm at Messologgi. One of these fruits, is called ” Φράπα” (Pomelo)– it is a kind of citrus but huge- and it is considered the Goliath of citrus fruits. Our teacher, Nancy, took these fruits and from the skin made a traditional sweet spoon, which called γλυκό του κουταλιού.
Γλυκό του κουταλιού (Sweet of the spoon) is a traditional sweet which is actually prepared from fruits boiled in sugar creating a tasty syrup. The spoon sweets can be made from the fruit or even from the skin of the fruit cut in small or large pieces.
These kind of spoon sweets are usually served as a sign of hospitality in Greece in small quantities – hence the spoon – and usually accompanies the traditional Greek black coffee (ελληνικός καφές σκέτος).
Every season has its fruit and that is a perfect way to preserve and enjoy the fruits all year around. The spoon sweets are not missing from any Greek home, so whenever you get the change taste them with a small spoon!
