Hydra is one of the islands of the Saronic gulf, therefore it is only 1.5 hours away from Athens, by boat. Hydra is famous for its picturesque narrow streets, traditional architecture, as well as for the fact that cars are not allowed here – visitors can take a sea taxi to get from one point of the island to another.
In Hydra you may visit the Museum of Historical Archives -which houses manuscripts from the Greek revolution-, the Melina Merkouri Auditorium, the Ecclesiastic Museum, the Koundouriotis Mansion and a plethora of churches and monasteries. You can also wander around the port and the beautiful streets next to it, and admire the colourful houses and the bougainvillea trees that can be found literally in every corner of the island.
A trip to Hydra is ideal for those who would like to admire the beauties of the Greek islands, while being in Athens. Greek language courses will continue throughout summer in our school in Athens and we would definitely recommend our students to visit this little gem of the Saronic gulf, to live an experience they will never forget!
