THE “ODYSSEYS” OF OUR STUDENTS – FROM IOANNINA TO CONSTANTINOPLE

In 1923 according to the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne a population exchange between Greece and Turkey took place. Around 2.200.000 Christians (Roum) came to Greece from Turkey and around 800.000 Muslims went to Turkey from Greece. In Greece we know very well our Christian “refugees”, but we do not know nearly anything about the Muslim “refugees” of the other side. Descendant of such a Muslim family is our student, Zuhal, who wrote for us the “Odyssey” of her own family, who started from Ioannina and moved to Constantinople (Istanbul).  A very nice text written in English as her level of Greek is not high yet. You may read the “Odyssey” here.
