Our recent Chania cultural experience took our students on a fascinating journey through the history, architecture and traditions of this beautiful Cretan city.
We started our walk at Koum Kapi and continued towards the Old Harbour and the Folklore Museum. Along the way, our students discovered some of the most important sights in Chania. They also learned more about the city’s rich past.
Walking Through Chania: Koum Kapi & the Old Harbour 🌊
On our way to the Folklore Museum, we explored two famous areas of Chania: Koum Kapi and the Old Harbour.
Every step gave us a chance to discover something new. We talked about the history of the city and admired its beautiful architecture. We also enjoyed the special atmosphere of Chania’s old streets.
At Koum Kapi, we saw the Gate of Sand, also known as Sabbionara. This is the only surviving gate of the old Venetian walls.
At the harbour, we admired the famous Neoria. The Venetians built these shipyards to repair and store their ships. Chania once had 23 Neoria. Today, only 10 remain.
Stepping Into the Past at the Folklore Museum 🧵🏺
Our walk continued to the Folklore Museum of Chania.
Here, our students travelled back in time. They discovered how people in Crete lived and worked in the past.
The museum has many authentic objects from everyday life. We saw agricultural tools, household items, handmade textiles and traditional costumes.
The museum also presents traditional crafts and old professions. These exhibits helped our students understand more about life in Crete in earlier times.
Meeting the People Behind the Stories ❤️
Our visit became even more special thanks to the warm welcome we received.
Mrs Eirini welcomed us while she was embroidering. Our students could watch this traditional craft up close.
Her son also shared interesting stories and information with us. He explained how people used silkworms to produce silk and told us more about this traditional process.
These personal stories made the visit even more meaningful. The objects in the museum were no longer just exhibits. They became part of real stories about people, work and everyday life.
A Chania Cultural Experience Through Greek 🇬🇷📚
At Alexander Greek School, we believe that learning Greek also means discovering Greece.
Our out of class activities help students use Greek in real situations. They also give them the chance to discover Greek history, culture and traditions.
This Chania cultural experience brought the language to life. Our students learned new words about history, architecture, crafts and everyday life.
They could also listen to Greek and practise speaking outside the classroom.
When students connect a new word with a real place or experience, they often remember it more easily.
Discovering Chania Beyond the Classroom 🌿
Our visit showed students many different sides of Chania.
We explored the Venetian walls at Koum Kapi. We admired the historic Neoria and the beautiful Old Harbour. At the Folklore Museum, we discovered traditional crafts and stories from everyday Cretan life.
Together, these experiences helped our students understand more about the history and traditions of Chania.
They also showed us that culture lives everywhere — in buildings, museums, crafts and, most importantly, in the people who keep these traditions alive.
