The Athens International Film Festival, also known as ‘Νύχτες Πρεμιέρας’, is back from 1–12 October 2025, promising an exciting lineup of films, awards, and cultural events. Since its first edition in 1995, this festival has become a cornerstone of the Greek and international cinema scene, attracting filmmakers and audiences from all over the world.

Awards and Recognition

The festival features several prestigious awards. In the International Competition, the Golden Athena is presented to the director of the most technically and aesthetically accomplished film, along with a €2,000 prize and a statuette designed by Georgios Sepetzoglou, sponsored by ZOLOTAS Jewelry. Other awards include the City of Athens Directing Award, the Best Screenplay Award, and the Fischer Audience Award, determined by daily audience votes.

The International Documentary Competition also awards a Golden Athena with a €2,000 prize, while the Greek Short Stories Competition supports emerging Greek filmmakers with awards for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Male and Female Performance, among others.

A Platform for Global Cinema

Over 27 years, the festival has highlighted future global cinema stars, such as directors Paul Thomas Anderson, Sofia Coppola, James Gray, Paolo Sorrentino, Danny Boyle, and Sean Baker. It has also hosted renowned international and Greek filmmakers and actors, including Yorgos Lanthimos, Costa Gavras, Peter Greenaway, Fatih Akin, Kim Ki-duk, Ari Folman, Sergei Polunin, and many more.
