The Athens Book Festival Returns to Pedion tou Areos
Books, ideas and culture in the heart of Athens

From 4 to 20 September 2026, one of Athens’ most anticipated cultural events returns to Pedion tou Areos, transforming one of the city’s largest urban parks into a lively meeting place for readers, writers, publishers and culture lovers.

The 54th Athens Book Festival brings together 210 publishing houses and 285 stands, offering visitors the opportunity to discover new releases, browse through thousands of books and explore the richness of contemporary Greek publishing. Admission is free, making the festival an accessible cultural experience for both Athenians and visitors to the city.

But the festival is much more than a book fair. Throughout its two-week programme, visitors can attend more than 200 cultural and educational events, including book presentations, discussions, concerts, theatre performances, children’s workshops and interactive activities.

A Festival Looking Towards the Future

This year’s central theme is:

“Sustainable Development. The Book as the Architect of Tomorrow.”

The theme connects literature and publishing with some of the most important challenges facing society and the planet. Inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, the festival explores subjects such as education, equality, environmental protection, responsible consumption, cultural inclusion and the sustainable development of cities and communities.

In this context, the book becomes more than an object to be read. It becomes a way of opening conversations about the future—how we live together, how we educate future generations and how we can create more sustainable and inclusive societies.

Something for Every Generation

The festival’s programme is designed to appeal to a wide audience. Alongside book presentations and discussions, there are activities for children and families, making the event an ideal destination for visitors of all ages.

The programme includes presentations by emerging writers, activities organised by the Greek Comics Academy, round-table discussions, children’s workshops and interactive events.

The cultural programme also extends beyond literature, with theatre performances, music, traditional shadow theatre and concerts creating a lively atmosphere throughout the festival.

Among the highlights are the children’s performance Alice in the Land of Fish, a traditional Karagiozis shadow-theatre performance, musical performances by artists and ensembles from Athens, and a special concert featuring Mario Strofalis and Eirini Toumpaki.
